DSL Wiring Suggestion from K7FJ
I signed up for 7Mb/s, the highest speed available. My DSL was running at 1.6 Mb/s when I first installed it. Not good, but I
could live with it.
I knew the Qwest twisted pair was a long run and a major impediment to DSL speed
but, on a whim, I decided to check to see if the telephone wiring in my house
might be adding to the problem. I disconnected the modem from the telephone
modular connector in the wall and ran a long telephone modular wire out a window
so that the modem was directly connected to the telephone line at the telephone
box on the outside of the house.
My download speed jumped from 1.6 Mb/s to 5.7 Mb/s and I'm a happy camper. My
guess is that a lot of houses have telephone wiring in the walls that act to
inhibit DSL speed. I told my ISP and they were amazed .. had never heard of
connecting directly to the Qwest line on the outside of the house.
